You Can Teach Your Children!

Do you absolutely need a teacher?

Parents: You know your child better than anyone! I have a master's degree from a prestigious school. However, they taught me almost nothing about teaching kids piano, let alone any clue about autism. With the exception of a few very gifted pupils, most special needs students will progress differently (I hesitate to use the word slowly because we must not underestimate the monumental achievement represented by mastery of a task we may take for granted) from a mainstream student.

You can keep up with the student

Given the slower progress, even any previous training in music, you will be able to keep far ahead of your child/pupil. All you need to know technically is included here. You as an adult have been teaching your children a great many things for their entire lives, and probably very effectively since you know them far better than any teacher. While not every parent has a musical aptitude, I am sure you will find you can easily stay several steps ahead of your child.

Enjoy yourself

As with the children, the most important thing for you is to have fun. If you can be excited about music, this will rub off on them. You can progress at any pace, in any combination of assisted or unassisted work, on paper versus at the keyboard, etc.

Support provided, step by step

Instructional paragraphs are provided at two levels: for you, and for the student. If you can't totally figure out the "parent/educator" introductions, then just follow the main text. You'll figure it out!

If you need ideas or assistance, please email me and we'll come up with a great plan!
